Creature Feature: Melon Heads

Awhile back I was riding in a car with a friend of mine on our way to Cleveland. When we got to Wisnor Rd he said something along the lines of “hey this is the street with the Melon Heads!” I had no idea what he was talking about. When I asked him what he meant, he told me this strange crazy sounding story about these ghost/monster children with misshapen heads that are supposed to run across the street at night. The story sounded so bizarre that I was convinced he was trying to pull my chain. When I got home I jumped on the computer to check it out. Turns out he wasn’t making it up. Apparently it’s a bit of a local legend. There are several versions of the story and Ohio isn’t the only place that has them. It’s actually a pretty interesting story, so I’ve decided to share the version he told me with you. Here is the story he told me:

Many years ago there was a doctor who lived out in the woods. He was lonely and had a lot of money so he decided to adopt a large number of children. Everyone thought it was great that he was helping so many kids. But no one knew what he was actually doing with the adopted children.

He began running experiments on the children and injected their heads with all kinds of fluids. Their heads became misshapen and deformed. The doctor began keeping them locked indoors so that no one would be able to see what happened to them.

One day the house caught on fire. The doctor was killed in the fire and everyone thought the children perished as well but some people believe that a few of the kids escaped into the woods, where they lived and could be seen. The kids would run away when spotted. They were supposed to be living in the woods for many years, hidden from the eyes of almost everyone. Eventually the children living in the woods died but their ghosts could still be seen running through the forest at night, trying to escape from the evil doctor.

Today people still visit the area in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the Melon Heads.

Do you have any strange local legends?
